Pull up a chair, Queen.

We need to talk about your health.

Black women deserve healthcare where our pain isn’t dismissed, our symptoms aren’t automatically blamed on our weight, and our knowledge of our own bodies isn’t treated like a nuisance. And you shouldn't have to walk into a nutrition appointment expecting to be blamed for what you eat, handed a restrictive meal plan, or told that losing weight will magically fix everything. At Kinfolk Nutrition, I’ll meet you wherever you are.Bring your questions, your concerns, and the lab results your doctor handed you without explanation. You can even bring your favorite snack!

Why Nutrition care?

for real life

You're managing work, family, relationships, caregiving, appointments, errands, and approximately 47 other things. Somewhere in there, you're also supposed to remember your medications, exercise, drink more water, get enough sleep, practice self care, and become an expert in nutrition.Respectfully: who has time for all that?Maybe you've also gotten an advice from your doctor, a supplement recommendation from Instagram, a "don't do this" from your girlfriend, and now you're standing in the grocery store genuinely unsure of what “eating healthy” looks like for you.

for your health

Diabetes & Blood SugarMaybe your A1c is higher than you'd like, or you've been told you have prediabetes. Maybe you're already managing Type 2 diabetes and are tired of feeling like every carbohydrate is out to get you.I'll help you understand how food, blood sugar, medications, activity, and everyday life fit together so you can make informed choices without turning every meal into a math assignment.

Heart HealthMaybe you recently were diagnosed with high cholesterol. Maybe you've had high blood pressure for as long as you can remember. Or, you have a family history of heart disease, heart attacks, or stroke.I'll help you understand the facts and fiction about nutrition and heart health. We'll talk about strategies that support your cardiovascular health while still leaving room for your favorite foods.

Women's HealthMaybe you're concerned about a fibroids, endometriosis, or PMOS/PCOS. Maybe your PMS or PMDD symptoms feel out of control. Or, maybe perimenopause has entered the room and is making you feel crazy.I'll help you understand the connections between nutrition and hormones. We'll build a plan that address your symptoms so food isn't a primary stressor when your body feels like it's doing the most.

No diagnosis, but something's up?Maybe you are experiencing fatigue, changes in your sleep, or brain fog. Maybe you've noticed new digestive symptoms or changes in your appetite. Or, maybe you're not seeing changes in the gym or while on a GLP-1.We'll start with what you know and what you're experiencing, and I'll help determine where nutrition may fit into the picture. We'll build a plan to address your concerns and seek additional support if needed.

what to expect

nutrition care that fits you

First, we sit down and talk.I'll ask about your health, your concerns, your eating patterns, your symptoms, your goals, and what's happening in your life. You don't need to prepare a perfect food diary. You don't need to clean up your diet before your first appointment.

We make sense of what's happening.Nutrition information is everywhere.Good information. Bad information. Outdated information. Information that contradicts information you read 15 minutes ago.I'll help you understand what's relevant to your health and what isn't.

Then we make a plan.If you work long hours... If you don't love cooking... If your family eats together... If your budget is tight... If you're exhausted... we'll build a plan that accounts for it.We'll identify practical changes that make sense for you. That might mean changing a meal, adding protein, finding easier ways to eat vegetables.

And then we keep talking.Your health isn't static.Neither is your life. We'll adjust your nutrition strategies as your needs, symptoms, priorities, and circumstances change. We can meet at whatever frequency works best for your schedule.

meet the founder

Hi! I'm Emma.

Certified Nutrition Specialist & Licensed Nutritionist in Maryland and DC

I created Kinfolk Nutrition because I believe that the relationships that nourish us shape our health just as much as the nutrients on our plate. I also believe Black women deserve healthcare providers who listen when we say something doesn't feel right.Black women continue to experience healthcare inequities that have evolved throughout history. There is literally a term for the stress that this inflicts on our bodies (see "weathering" coined by Arline Geronimus). So not only does it mean our symptoms and pain may not be believed or taken seriously, it means that these inequities impact our longevity.I can't change the entire healthcare system from my laptop (unfortunately). But I can make sure that your nutrition appointment isn't another place where you have to fight to be heard. My approach is weight-inclusive, culturally responsive, and informed by intuitive eating, HAES®, and harm reduction principles. So, when you contact Kinfolk Nutrition, you're talking to me. I'm the founder, owner, and solo practitioner. I'll be the person sitting across from you at your appointment, reviewing your information, answering your questions, making recommendations, and supporting your progress.
